The Middle East will continue to be backwater until it embrace science, period. In a real sense, they've reaped what they sowed.

Oh, Jan. This is a hoot! I've studied the Middle East for years, lived there (in an Arab town), read lots of things, etc., and I have never heard this one. Politics, overthrow of democratically elected governments, etc. etc. all have no bearing on things there, huh? Have you deduced this strictly from what you've heard on Fox News?

it is refreshing to read the rare comment from someone residing in the middle east that americans do not have horns. I recenty had a discussion with my son on the ability of the media to change the course of events. What i don't understand is the complicity on all sides of an issue to believe the half truths.. blatant lies.... items taken out of context... and propaganda that spews forth from these 'self important' idiots all over the world. Pataan , Al Ja Zeera is no better than Fox News..or the people that take them seriously but kudo's to the pics Tue 19-Aug-2003 21:08

I actually find the alley shots visually intruiging. They have so many interesting angles and light. I suppose it's all in the interpretation.
I felt very angry to see the photo of the women crossing the plaza with a US soldier training his gun on them. What insanity! This whole thing is insanity. I appreciate the humanity you bring with your documentary approach. Thank you, G and Salam, both, for sharing your thoughts and photos.

Salam & G.; thank you very much for your eyewitness reports both in the last days of the Saddam regime as presently. The regular media are mostly "embedded" and give us lies when's convenient. Your voices and pictures are important so keep the good work up! Take care! Wed 20-Aug-2003 01:33

Thank you for keeping us informed. You give us the human aspect of what is going on in Iraq without the usual big newsmedia gloss.

May God Bless Iraq and the People of Iraq as He has blessed us!

I must say that the beating of G upsets me deeply. This violation by a US soldier to me is just as bad as a police officer beating an innocent "suspect" or our judicial system killing an innocent victim because the people who were in charge ignored the phrase that is so often uttered: "Innocent until proven guilty". There are many injustices in this world, plenty of them in Iraq and plenty of them here in the good ol' USA. To all those who would want to tell me to shut up, it's better here than anywhere else...no, I will not apologize for criticizing our country's faults. The ability to do so is one of the things that makes our country so great. Anyway, there are varying degrees of justice and injustice in various parts of the world at different times. The USA of 150 years ago enslaved blacks, held lynchings, and didn't allow women to vote, while children were seen and not heard. Now, children still can be seen and not heard (just kidding!). Why shouldn't Iraq be able to learn from our experiences? And why shouldn't we learn from them? Are we too arrogant to believe that we're imperfect? Just look at our own power crisis, look at the embassy bombing, look at 9/11, look at the DC sniper, look at numerous crimes that are committed in this country daily. Who are we kidding when we claim to be so superior to all other people on this planet? What a joke. I hope that one day we can complete the task started by greats such as Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lennon. Who needs this shit? Who needs the pain? Not me. I'm just trying to do what's best for my son and I hope that this world doesn't go to hell in a handbasket. Oh, and I'm an Atheist. Yes, a heathen doomed to go to Hell, whatever. We need to get over the whole religion thing and remember that respect and kindness and thoughtfulness and giving and caring are what it's all about. Name one religion (or non-religion) that has not had at least one follower succumb to "evil". Can't think of one? Me either. Wed 20-Aug-2003 02:46

G, these are again fantastic photos. Thank you for sharing your gift with us. I'm so very upset that you were beaten by our soldiers. (Hell, I'm very upset about *all* of this!) I hope you heal, inside and out. And Salam, thanks for posting the pics. You rock, big time.

Love to you both!

Patann,

What she means (I think) is the necessity of giving up the certainty of faith for the eternal doubt of science. Doubt is safer than faith.

Many things are possible with certainty that are difficult or impossible with doubt.

Americans will be pulling out of your country very soon.We know when we aren't wanted....and even when we are downright hated,.
President Bush wants to be re-elected,and polls suggest a majority of Americans don't think Iraq is worth the money, effort,or American lives.
Too bad.Iraq coulda,woulda,shoulda had a future.

Thanks for posting these photos, they are so vivid. Seeing your comments, Salam, makes me feel very committed to pushing my local elected leaders to stay in Iraq until we have finished what we started there. The link to Iraq Today was also very helpful.

We have a responsibility to you.

I am deeply sorry for your friend's negative encounter with our forces. Please know that the vast majority of Americans are deeply ashamed when such a deed occurs and demand justice.

You are, and remain, in our thoughts and prayers.

Hang Tough Salam & G!

I value your reports. Gives a real picture to what's going on. Hard to tell what the right things to do are but we need to keep at it. Try and turn this experience into a gig at the NY Times as coorespondents in Iraq. Get some R&R in the Big Apple.

Iraq seems to have turned into the Wild West. Sorry every religious radical seems to be drawn to the Iraqi neighborhood. At least they are all gathering in one spot to get our help to meet their makers. Too bad they couldn't line up in a more orderly fashion.

Is there a way that you can write about it? I heard real wierd stories, and the stuff that happened to them. Well I heard mostly about the hardships of life in Iraq.
Anyways that pic of Friday prayers, remind me of Rap music vidoes and boyz in da hood!!!

Gee, I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to you..it makes me so angry and sad...I hope you're feeling better. Your pictures are amazing...please keep taking them and please be careful!!!! I'm often thinking of you and Salam as I keep up with the news in Iraq, and I'm so happy and grateful that you and your friends are hanging in there thus far. In all the chaos in the world, it becomes easier and easier to fall into despair, but I hope that you both don't lose hope. There's so much anger, and there's so much loss, and it feels as though the entire world is run by fools and idiots, but in my heart, I truly feel that it will all turn out okay in the end. Somehow. So please don't lose hope--although I fear that's easy for me to say.

I am very appreciative for all of the work that you guys have been doing...your pictures and Salam's writing are so vivid and warm, often funny, and always thought-provoking. I'm just a stranger living in an even stranger land, but your work means a lot to me. And so does your safety! Please take care, Salam. Please take care, Gee.

Chris from Springfield:

You might want to revise your inclusion of Mohandas Gandhi in that list. Some quotes of his:

"Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the Act depriving the whole nation of arms as the blackest."

"I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence."

Great pictures, G. Loved the dead alley series. Thank you, Salam, for posting them for us.

It is good to know that there are more people over there with mixed feelings about this whole mess. So many people with who I've talked seem so sure of themselves, so righteous and absolute, that I began to think that there was something wrong with my glasses. I seem to see only a incredible variety of gray shades.

Hope you are feeling better, G. Beatings are worse on the soul than on the body.

Crabby A,
Gandhi was a pacifist but he wasn't a fool. You can't have peace if your enemies won't play fair. Which is why I would prefer having all the power and the ability to destroy, but the wisdom and restraint to avoid using that power, over being powerless and getting stomped on. It isn't fun to be a non-custodial dad who has to pay child support and suffer the indignity of having no say in what happens to my son except during my court-sanctioned "visitation time". If I had the means at my disposal to enforce a joint custody arrangement, I would use it. And that would be possible only if the state of Massachusetts gave me the power to do so, but I am powerless and therefore a fool, unlike Gandhi. So I agree with the quotes you posted, and would still include Gandhi in my list of people to try to emulate.

I personally was against the war in Iraq. Why? I don't know. Honestly examining my feelings, the closest I can come to is - Being from a minority, it came just too close to the "Big Bully White Man", powerful right now, crapping all over the rest of the world. They don't quite treat the rest of humanity as humans, just like themselves. Heck, I see them treat animals with much more *empathy*.

Now are my feelings irrational or what!

Salam, sorry, the pain powerful men like Bush & Sadam can cause is truly scary.

I've been back for more than a month now - I'm finding it much easier to acknowledge what I really enjoyed about being there, & some of the strange things as well. Once you stop flinching at anything that remotely sounds like a gunshot/explosion, and clear your mind of the anger, it gets easier. Man - what I wouldn't have done for one of your cold cold beers. But Mosul's a long way from Baghdad - I just settled for Atlantic Cola, Sumer smokes, and pizza from Al Zohoor downtown. Good luck to you guys, keep up the great work. Two quotes, both from Robert Frost.
Sometimes you hear alot about us in the USA wishing the best, but not always appearing to try to give it. As a whole, it isn't from bitterness or greed, but from a more curious feeling.

"Americans are like a rich father who wishes he knew how to give his son the hardships that made him rich."

If things look ugly, dark, and you despair, do not worry. Even if things don't wind up perfect, then there is always this:

"In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."

God Bless, and thank you for *all* of your pictures.

I read these blogs and find them interesting even if my opinions differ on certain matters. I have to comment about a previous post because as the wife of a Soldier deployed I just have to say no, most soldiers are not poor, nor do they all come from the backwoods of Oklahoma or West Virginia nor was the military their only choice. It's an ALL Volunteer Army many joined because they wanted to serve and protect their country, many because they are patriotic, some wanted to travel, some for the education and yes some are just pricks but hey you get that no matter where you are. I have met so many people from different parts of the world through the military and I believe that has made me more understanding of other cultures. Tue 9-Sep-2003 07:09

I'm in Canada and I can't stand to see or listen to George Bush either. The only way I can stand to find out what he and his henchmen are up to is to read the paper. It's sad that so many innocent people had to die for God know's what purpose. I don't think it was the one we were told. If I hear the term "weapons of mass distruction" one more time, I'll scream. I'm a 28 year old british woman. What can we do to help Salam? At the moment I write letters telling my MP I want the occupation internationalised because I'm sure european soldiers will cause less damage! What do I know!?! I've never even met a spanish/french/german/polish soldier - probably all 17 year old boys with a gun are likely to behave badly. I sure as hell wouldn't like them in my street with the right to search my house - I would be scared of being raped. In the sixties the americans had a peace core - kids went and did voluntary work abroad before they started college. If the country became safe I think it would be beautiful if thousands of kids from all over the world came over and helped with rebuilding - directed by Iraqi's - I'd love to do that. How naieve am I? - please feel free to take the piss. Love S. Fri 12-Sep-2003 09:11

War is hell. Nobody in Japan or Germany had it easy during our occupation of their countries, but they had a stiff upper lip and are all the better for it. Diane from Canada, do you think Iraq would be better off with Saddam? Susie - I think you're right: 17 yr olds with a gun from Western countries are probably all the same. I think your peace corp idea is a great one - and not naive. It's sad that in today's cynical world, you'd even have to think it was naive. Lagitabond makes a silly statement when she calls American soldiers, "pricks". I wonder if she's ever met these guys. Or been under the pressure they're under. Probably not. Though I'm not in the military, I know many who are and they're some of the finest people in the USA. AP in New York - you seem to have a gigantic chip on your shoulder. The U.S. made a big effort in both Japan and Germany to ensure that infrastructure was restored. This was helped along by the fact that the U.S. was the biggest creditor nation at the time. Now it is the biggest debtor nation, and it has bitten off more than it can chew. Making Iraq 'secure' and winning 'hearts and minds' (I hate that this has become such a cliche) will cost a lot of money for a country that has already run up a huge deficit. I do not think comparing the occupation of Iraq to Japan or Germany is that valid. A more valid incident from 20th century history would be Suez. Two countries going it alone without any international support and then being internationally embarassed. I'm not happy that it has turned out this way. Sat 13-Sep-2003 17:53

Read your history "X" it was America under Eisenhower who
Forced the invading countries France ,Britain and Israel to withdraw from occupied Egypt immediately and unconditionally and the pretext of the invasion was Egypt taking over control of what was then the international waterway of the Suez canal (running through their own country i.e like the Panama canal) which the invaders saw as a threat to their strategic transport links to the Middle East and Asia.I guess you could call it the equivalent to Iraq/WMD or Iraq Al Qaida link of the 1950's ie very tenuous indeed. The outcome? it bought down the British and French goverments of the day and started the winding down of both countries foreign empires. Nick,London

Nick,

Curious that you left out Egypt's blockade of the Strait of Tiran from your description which fomented this entire affair, and from which Egypt backed down. You also ignored the Egyptian armistice violations which led to the invasion. The US made the only "concession," which was to guarantee to Israel that they would maintain freedom of navigation in this waterway. The US forcing Israel to give back the Sinai without any concession from Egypt led directly to the 1967 war. The UN was to supervise the Sinai peninsula, but failed miserably, thus 1967.
Contrary to your statements, here are the UN speech transcripts from the time:

http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/History/object.html

The US objected to the invasion, but also objected to the blockade.

Where do you get your history? Noam Chomsky?

So If giving back Sinai was wrong?
Why have they got back now, After the Peace accords between Eygpt and Israel.
What's this shit about Noam Chomsky?
If someone now agrees with Eisenhower and US policy in the 1950's i.e don't take one side or the other in the Israeli/ Arab dispute their some sort of lefty are they because that's news to me I did'nt think Eisenhower was.
Also don't assume I'm agin the removal of sadam please I just think we should have waited until we got a more multilateral coalition going (like for all his faults Bush's dad took the trouble to do. Because this dumb administration did'nt wait or just insulted possible post war allies i.e people who maybe didnt want to fight but could have helped in the peace keeping afterwards and do a bit more post war planning the Iraqi civilians and our troops in Basra are suffering now where incedently we are sending another 5000.

Nick,

You clearly aren't interested in discussing this on a factual level, your previous posts demonstated that in an attempt to tell history but leave out the parts that don't fit your bizarro view of the world... and your latest confirmed it, at least the bits of meaning i discerned through the haze of misspelling and bad grammar.

Thu 18-Sep-2003 14:31
Posted by:x
"Bizarro? " what's that? Not part of the language I was taught at school.
What's to discuss anyway? Instead of making cheap points you yourself should come up with some sort meaningful statement or is this as I suspect all along a lame excuse to slag off the UN an organisation setup largely under the auspices of the US in post war San Francisco.

i look forward to the day that (our) american soldiers are called upon to promote the kind of freedom and well-being we (in the U.S.) have learned to take for granted.
i can hardly accept the notion that we can fight for democracy through such blatant violation of basic human rights.
i understand that in times of war, a certain level of danger exists for each and every human being, whether it be soldier or civilian, and i pray for the safety of all through the course of this war.

I DEMAND (again as a U.S. citizen) that we are entitled to know the truth about each and every incident in which human rights are violated. It is only through understanding of this truth that we can support (or condemn) our country's actions in a global context. I hope that we are told the truth about what we inflict upon others, and that we are not condemned as a people for the actions for which our country is responsible.

wishing peace and understanding upon us all,

just wanted to let u know that the photos are great well not the circumstances they were taken in. but to be able to see photos of things we cant see here (australia) is to be honest i dont have words to explain it. i was born in aus and went to iraq 4 yrs ago (with my mum & 3 sisters) and meet my entire family for the first time. and looking at these photos takes me back, life in iraq is extremely different to life here (that really doesnt need to be said) but to tell u the truth life without family is really no life at all. so thanx for the photos sorry about the beating (read about it on dear raed) i'll keep looking for updates of photos just in case one is of a family member. To G. and Salam:
I have just finished Salam's book, sitting comfortably in my house in the US. I am utterly amazed at the articulateness - no, the unbelievable, staggering articulateness of salam pax. there are so many aspects to his blog that I want to share it with a number of different people, for different reasons: the asshole patriots i have the displeasure of knowing need to read the perfectly-argued comments about the West's misuse of Iraq/Iraqis for decades as well as the irony of democracy thru bombing (more succinct than any american pundit i've read); my american-born son and my american friends need to read the bits about interacting with western culture, since my ex-husband is from the middle-east, and even thru his unpleasantness i've always had sympathy for what he was/is going thru; every flippin' american should read what it's like to be bombed; the nobel committee needs to review this, for obvious reasons (sorry, don't know the committee personally - wish i did!).
and now, i have pictures.
thank you both. my best to you and your family and friends. i wish i could do more than 'wish you well'; perhaps getting everyone i know to read the book and log on to see the photos will help.

I have sent your web site to MoveOn.org - also there is a new web site now called "Victory in Iraq" - would you be willing to comment on it, pictures are being presented to us of the "good things" that are being accomplished. Bill Moyers has a progrm called "Now" which airs every Friday and his section called "News You May Have Missed. I am not sure if this info is of any use. The American Public is frustrated by conflicting report, half truths, outright lies. Thanks for being there for us. Caroline Marie Mon 27-Oct-2003 18:05

i want to say something to what is called "FtlaudNole".. i wonder if u r American or Israli? whom do u want to condemn? the Iraqis are the masters and they will remain the masters and will get rid of the "occupation" and the occupiers sonner or later. So be careful.

Adding the words underneath each photo is like signing your bias at the time.

I wan't to thank you for sharing your photos. My younger brother in in Iraq right now and he hasn't sent any photos home. It is a real eye opener to see the things that he is seeing on a daily basis. Thanks again! Be safe and know that my prayers are with all of you. Thu 8-Apr-2004 08:32

What a mess... It all seemed so black and white when we went to war. I really thought we were going to help Iraq and protect ourselves. The blunt instrument of war is so messy! What is wrong with the human race that war continues to be necessary and we can do such horrible things to each other? No where to go but forward in Iraq now and hope for the best for it's people and our troops. Can't say I feel good about our Iraqi brothers the way they kill us and can understand why they hate us when I see how those idiots treated the Iraqi prisoners. Hopefully when the smoke clears and the sacrifice is over and our children look back to this ugly time they can say that it was all worth it. 0) Fri 30-Apr-2004 15:36

I'm just loloking for some more photos of Irak, especially Baghdad, the present Baghdad... On TV ve've just got news of the military actions, but no photos of the damages. I'm not morbid at all. Just want to see the real look of Iraqui people's daily life. That part of "irreality" they have to cope with, I guess...If someone could give some e-mail adresses I'd be vey grateful.

You know the weirdest thing about taking the http://www.buyoriginalnonijuice.com is that I feel a strange kind of inner calm. http://www.grandnoni.com Almost like my body is happy internally strange huh? http://www.grandnoni.com/noni-juice/ ...... Well, it is to me as I feel like my system is normally running a full scale rebellion. update later today to follow.... http://www.noni-juice.tc ...... Okay, it's definitely helping with concentration. I feel much more alert at work for the entire shift than I have done in ages. http://www.noniexpert.com After the course finished I still felt fine and carried on feeling fine until about 6pm. http://www.premiumnoni.com When I started to flag a little. http://www.premiumnonijuice.com But that was largely due to not taking a break. http://www.noniexpert.com/noni-juice/ Which I decided was a good idea. http://www.nonibusiness.com After the break I carried on until 10pm without any problems. http://www.pureauthenticnonijuice.com …… The most interesting story of today, comes not from me but my other half. http://www.wellness-noni.info Our kitten had woke him up in the night almost hour on hour from 4pm until 7pm when he finally got up for work. …… http://www.noni-webportal.com ….. He took the http://www.nonisuccessonlinenow.com and staggered off to work. Fri 7-Oct-2005 11:56

Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant (cancerous) cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).
